Mathematics did not begin in ancient Greece. It began in Africa — specifically in the Nile Valley and the Great Lakes region of East Africa — tens of thousands of years before Pythagoras was born. This course recovers the African origins of mathematics, from the Ishango bone (the world's oldest mathematical tool, found in the Congo) to the mathematical genius of the Pyramids, and reveals how African mathematical wisdom is encoded in art, architecture, music, and spiritual practice across the continent.

Recovering Africa's mathematical legacy — from the Ishango bone to the fractals of Kuba cloth.
I was told mathematics was invented by the Greeks. This course showed me that my Congolese ancestors were doing mathematics 20,000 years before Greece existed. I wept.
